The creator, Karl Peglau, never thought the green figurine hat to cross the pedestrian, or the red that prohibits the passage, were to become a personality Berlin almost half a century later.
The October 13, 1961, Karl Peglau presented its «figurine street» in the Ministry of Transport of the RDA. The ‘Ampelmann‘ was born. Born in the former East Germany but did not disappear with her, but increased its presence in the wake of reunification. The mythical man from East Berlin traffic lights turns 50, and it does become a beloved symbol of the city. And the «Ampelmann» is much more than a traffic signal. It is a key attraction of Berlin and unrivaled sales success.
